It's So Easy To Grow Your Own Garlic!

Garlic is a staple in our house and something we always keep in stock and use pretty much daily for cooking. It is full of potent medicinal properties, and it adds tons of flavor to your food. It is incredibly high in antioxidants, can help the body detox from heavy metals, may reduce blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels, and it combats sickness including the common cold.

This time of year, we could all use an immune boost. Garlic is one of the first things in my toolbox that I reach for when someone in my house is sick. If you’ve followed me on Instagram for a while, you’ve seen me chop up and swallow raw garlic like a pill anytime I’m under the weather.

If you’ve never had fresh garlic, I highly recommend it! Fresh garlic is THE BEST, and it’s so easy to grow. You literally toss the cloves in the ground in full sun in the fall and basically just forget about it until spring. It's a great low maintenance crop that anyone can grow, and this time of year is when you want to get it in the ground.

Garlic likes cooler temps, full sun, and rich well drained soil.

How to grow in the fall:

Pull apart a bulb of garlic and put the cloves in the dirt about 4" deep and 6" apart in full sun around Nov (if you live in the south). When the leaves turn brown around April, it is time to harvest.

How to grow in the spring:

After the ground has thawed and there is no danger of frost, put the cloves in the dirt about 4” deep and 6” apart in a slightly dry area of the garden. When the leaves turn brown, it’s time to harvest.

This pic was from my last garlic harvest. Hopefully I’ll have a new crop to share with you in the spring! Happy planting!
